I'm a big souls guy—and I generally make an effort to play a variety of soulslike spinoffs, especially since they've gotten pretty good, lately. Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen, Remnant 2, Nine Sols—we've had some rather solid offerings. Alas, I never got a chance to try out Mortal Shell. If you fancy a challenging RPG with a dark, horror-tinged vibe that won't eat up as much of your time as the Elden Ring campaign, you should grab Mortal Shell for free while you can. Developer Core Symmetry was founded by four like-minded people with a shared passion for Dark Souls, and the studio's debut game is an intriguing and inventive soulslike with some genuinely unique ideas. The moment I knew I would love Mortal Shell was when the extremely sparse soundtrack kicked in during a boss battle. Less music and more horrific, soul-wrenching ambient drone, it set the tone for the fight as I dodged, turned to stone to avoid damage, and then abruptly died. Unlike most games, Mortal Shell isn't happy unless you're uncomfortable - and that's something to be treasured. Read the rest of the story... I’m sure Game Pass subscribers can relate to the pain of having a game leave the service, especially when you’re in the middle of a hefty playthrough. Your options are to binge the game in two weeks, buy the game outright, or cry. Unless you were playing Mortal Shell, in which case all you have to do is wait a month for the title to be re-added. The fantasy Soulslike had left the service on November 30th last year, but now it's back, this time with the Enhanced Edition. Read more
