Trepang2 taps into something that a lot of FPS games either neglect or don't recognize as being important: terror. Through the sheer volume of the guns and the fierce screams and barks of your enemies, Trepang2 makes you feel vulnerable. You spend the early levels burrowed into a corner, trying to stave off a panic attack as the walls explode around you. Later, the dynamic is flipped. The greatest achievement of Trepang2, even more than its sleek visuals and best-in-class weapon effects (I dare you to fire that SPAS 12 while wearing headphones) is how it produces atmosphere. An FPS with barely any dialogue, any considerable narrative, it's nevertheless oppressive, seedy, and frightening. Playing Trepang2 feels dangerous. There aren't enough single player FPS games anymore. Over the last few years, the genre has been dominated by multiplayer and co-op projects like Valorant, Escape From Tarkov, Destiny 2, and XDefiant. That's made one of the exceptions to this rule, last year's ferocious, FEAR inspired single player Trepang2 more than welcome. Some games ooze excellence, displaying a mastery of the genre they exist in. These often rise to the top of the pile, pointed to as paragons by all who encounter them.
