As part of the PC crowd, I'm pretty resigned to the fact that, even if its initial November release date sticks, we won't be getting GTA 6 over here in 2026. Rockstar Games will want to let its console version sit for a while, whether that's to ensure the PC version is as polished as possible, or simply to entice you to shell out for a PS5 or Xbox copy knowing that you'll probably buy it again when it comes to the Steam shores. In a world where Rockstar Games can more than comfortably get by on just GTA and Red Dead Redemption, some of its more maverick but no less beloved series have been put on extended hiatus. Bully is a prime example, but a recent mod project to turn it into a GTA Online-style experience really breathed new life into it. 20 years on, Bully is still very much a cult hit. It's relatively understated by Rockstar Games' standards; it's a far more concise experience compared to its other sprawling open-world games, but it's no less excellent. If you're still holding out for a sequel to Rockstar's Bully, then I admire your relentless optimism. Lend me some, would you? I don't ever see a world where Bully 2 gets made, sadly, but I think I've just found the next best thing for fans of one of the most beloved open-world games in Rockstar's stacked catalog. In the pantheon of 'games we would all like but we might never get,' Bully 2 is up there now with Half-Life 3, Sleeping Dogs 2, and a new Titanfall. Originally released back in 2006, Bully takes the fundamental GTA formula and ages it down. Instead of a hardened career criminal, you're tearaway schoolboy Jimmy Hopkins. Rather than robbing banks, you're dropping cherry bombs in the faculty toilet. Funny, feisty, and with a great soundtrack by Shawn Lee, with Rockstar now focused on Grand Theft Auto 6, Bully's return seems less likely than ever. But it hasn't been forgotten completely. While the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date feels like it's miles off, Bully, one of Rockstar's most underrated titles, is the perfect way to wile that time away. The 2006 action-adventure game sees you playing as a rebellious boy named Jimmy Hopkins as he attends Bullworth Academy and it feels just like the GTA games of its era, except instead of driving cars and using guns, Jimmy rides a bike and uses a slingshot. With Grand Theft Auto 6 finally on the horizon, now's a good time to look back at Rockstar Games' catalog. Game Informer’s Blake Hester published a detailed report all about the Bully 2 that might have been and what led to the studio developing the sequel’s downfall. In short, Rockstar New England was pulled in multiple directions to the point where Bully 2 was no longer the focus of the developers who worked there. After 21 years as a Rockstar Games big cheese, Dan Houser will leave the company in March. He’s co-written almost every Rockstar game since 1999, including Grand Theft Auto from London through to V, Bully, Max Payne 3, and the Red Dead Redemptions. That’s made him a big influence on the tone of Rockstar’s games. I wonder how that might change once he’s moved on. Where he’s going and what he’ll do next, we don’t know. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. Rockstar get a lot of praise for their big creaking flagships, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. But I ll be honest, y all: neither series really grabbed me. I toyed with many a GTA, and I dabbled a bit in the rootin tootin wild west of RDR. But I didn t finish any of them, eventually growing bored every time.
