After years of hype, on Thursday December 7, 2023, The Day Before was finally unleashed onto PC. Immediately, it was clear that something was wrong. A lot of players couldn't get into lobbies. Those who did discovered empty, lifeless maps, and a survival shooter that looked extremely different to what had been shown in trailers. First reported by 80 Level, The Day Before studio Fntastic has reportedly sued Russian news site Yakutia.info, which is based in Fntastic's founders' home region of Yakutia in Siberia. Following its fiasco with The Day Before, developer Fntastic assured fans that it was going to embark on a path of redemption and righteousness. Well, I'm not so sure, looking at its latest post in its community Discord. The studio is currently working on a new project called Items, and despite criticism for using volunteers to help get The Day Before out of the door, it seems the path of redemption and righteousness doesn't include eliminating free labor. The Day Before developer Fntastic has canceled the Kickstarter for its new game, and simultaneously revealed that another project is in the works. Months after going silent and completely shutting down The Day Before, Fntastic returned with a game called Escape Factory, but it didn't meet the studio's Kickstarter funding goal. The Day Before has to be one of the wildest rides the gaming industry has ever seen. The Day Before Steam page seems to have returned - at least, that's how it appears at first glance. Having disappeared from Valve's store in the wake of myriad criticisms and controversies, before being pulled offline entirely, Fntastic's notorious would-be MMO (it was actually more like an extraction shooter) is ostensibly back, and cheaper than ever. A little investigation however reveals the new The Day Before Steam page is hiding some malicious secrets. Ah, The Day Before, we hardly knew ye. The ill-fated survival horror game was pretty much dead on arrival back in December of last year, and by Monday January 22, it was erased from the ether entirely.
