Whether you've rattled off the Hollow Knight Silksong 100% and are still finding excuses to explore Team Cherry's masterpiece (guilty as charged), or bounced off its demanding action and hostile world, you're probably looking for your next Metroidvania. You could opt for a newcomer like MIO: Memories in Orbit, or established staples such as Bloodstained, Rain World, or Nine Sols. But I'm going to recommend Ultros, which handles the genre in a unique manner that took me a little while to warm to, only to grow into an experience I'll treasure for many years to come. The following fixes have been rolled out in Ultros: Adjusted the physics for flying with the Thruster extractor, for a much smoother ride Added a 4K resolution option. PLEASE NOTE that this only affects some of the graphics (in particular the UI) because the artwork was created with an HD resolution in mind (1920 x 1080, or "Sharp" in the options menu). 4K will still cause your computer to use roughly twice the electricity compared to playing in HD, so we only recommend the setting if you are playing on a very large screen. Ultros is one of those games that's born to stick in the memory. Not only is it one of the most visually vibrant games of the year so far with its neon colour palette that's an instant-KO-to-my-eyeballs, but the way it twists and rewires core tenets of the Metroidvania rulebook also make it one of the boldest and most daring examples of its genre. I'll say it now: it doesn't always stick the landing. But if there's one thing Ultros does constantly throughout its 15-odd hour runtime, it's that it's always, always interesting. 2024's already been a big year for Metroidvania fans. Hardly a month in, we've already seen Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launch and infuse the genre with killer momentum as we careen towards more surefire bangers like Animal Well, Tales of Kezera: Zau, Earthblade, and - yes - Hollow Knight: Silksong. Each one seems to have a distinct hook; Prince of Persia marries the precision platforming of Celeste with stylish combat, Animal Well is all about nonviolent puzzle-solving, and Tales of Kenzera: Zau promises a heartfelt story.
