As part of our ongoing efforts to celebrate and enhance the Square Enix back catalogue, we’re reviewing a number of classic titles to see where we can introduce modern quality of life improvements. One key focus has been retrofitting Steam Cloud support, allowing players to seamlessly carry their progress across multiple devices – including PC and Steam Deck. Look! A ranking of the 50 best RPGs on PC. I know, you never asked for this, but here it is. It is 100 percent correct, we double-checked. The RPG is a broad and deep sea and fishing out the best games from its characterful waters is no easy task. But we are capable fishers on the good ship RPS, and know when to humanely throw back a tiddler or fight to heave up a monster. Enough of this salty metaphor. Spoiler alert, RPGs are kinda ridiculous. Most games are, of course. While the Mythbusters may have shown that carrying Doomguy’s loadout into battle isn’t as bad as it might sound, there’s a reason they’ve never done a follow-up about doing it after taking a few rockets to the face. Likewise, we can’t know the effect of glugging down fifty health potions a day, but it must mean a lot of pauses for the heroic knight to hurriedly get his armour off for a quick pee-break. Most RPGs ask you to save the world, but not all of them offer a world worth saving. Honestly, there’s been quite a few where given the choice I’d have joined the evil overlord just to beat up all the potion vendors who wouldn’t even give me a discount before the final battle, and for the mere chance of stabbing the guard in Act 1 who wouldn’t let me into The Town Where The Actual Bloody Game Starts. This week though, I’m interested in the other side of that – the worlds that become more than just a place to grind for loot and XP. The places that feel real.

Square Enix want indie developers to make a new Gex game! Wait, no, that’s not exciting. Let’s go again. Square Enix want indie developers to make a new Fear Effect game! Alice, look, come on. Buck your ideas up. Square Enix want indie developers to make a new Anachronox game! Lawks! As planned, they’ve had a root around in the Eidos back catalogue and pulled out three IPs they don’t really know what to do with. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. Aka ‘the one where a talking planet joins your party.’ Sure, Deus Ex gets all the Ion Storm cred, but let’s not forget that the other half of the John Romero-founded outfit also pulled off something pretty special, with gonzo roleplaying adventure Anachronox.
