If you want to enjoy the majority of Capcom's latest games on Steam, Denuvo DRM is a piece of baggage you will have to live with. Monster Hunter Wilds, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil Requiem - all of them use it, and upcoming sci-fi game Pragmata will as well. Strangely, despite its widespread use of Denuvo, Capcom decided last month that for its excellent Resident Evil 4 Remake it would switch DRM software to something called Enigma Protector. As someone who loves the entirety of Capcom's beloved survival horror series (I even played the VR version of the fourth game), I'd say the Resident Evil 4 remake isn't just a revitalization of a horror classic, but an improvement on one of the most groundbreaking games ever made. However, the dreary atmosphere of the original has lost some of its fear factor, not only because of its action focus but also because of its older visuals. In the seven or eight hours it takes to complete the original Resident Evil 4, you will find more imagination, variety, and creative ambition than in any days-long open-world game. The mechanics are simple. The gunplay is clean. But it moves, with great energy and pace, from one visionary set piece to another. Resident Evil 9 is presumably in the pipeline. When the Resident Evil 4 Remake came out last year, it enjoyed pretty much the same level of success as the original all those years ago. The original Resident Evil 4 is one of the best videogames ever made. Excelling at both tense action set pieces and a consistently entertaining horror comedy tone, the 2005 game is a standout in creator Capcom's body of work - which means a lot from the studio and publisher responsible for Dragon's Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Rise, Resident Evil 2, and so much more. There are a few characters that are just built different. For me, it's World of Warcraft's Sylvanas Windrunner, or Dragon Age's Morrigan - perhaps even add Uncharted's Nathan Drake to the list. But my roster is relatively obscure, based around the games I played (and was allowed to play) as a child. Gorgeous as the RE Engine may be, its support for ray tracing leaves much to be desired, as keenly highlighted in recent Resident Evil remakes. Thankfully, those searching for improved ray traced effects are in luck as modders are finally doing the series justice with proper ray tracing rendering that Capcom had hidden away. Resident Evil 4 Remake is a terrific example of how to reinvent a classic game without sacrificing what initially made it great. Baldur's Gate 3 is undoubtedly this year's best game in my opinion, and possibly even this decade's greatest, too. With The Game Awards 2023 nearing, the event just announced its nominees for this year's GOTY award. Capcom has revealed that it is working on a successor to RE Engine. While details are currently fairly light, we do know that it has been codenamed REX Engine, standing for RE neXt Engine, apparently.
