The Warhammer 40k Space Marine remaster is a strange beast. The new Master Crafted Edition is an overhauled and upgraded version of the beloved 2011 original, but it landed to a surprisingly damp reception, with next to no active players and those that did pick it up delivering it a damning 29% Steam review score. Now, developer Sneakybox and publisher Sega are offering a full refund to anyone who bought a copy, and have introduced a limited-time discount for those who wish to upgrade from the old Anniversary Edition. One of the finest uses of Game Workshop's sprawling sci-fi universe to date is Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. Everyone's talking about Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 right now and for good reason - it's getting plaudits from nearly everywhere, its player numbers are stunning, and people are just loving smashing Tyranids into goop. I can't help but look back 13 years, however, and stare wistfully at the original Warhammer 40k Space Marine game, remembering some of the smashing times I had in it - literally, as the Thunder Hammer was my weapon of choice. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 offered another gameplay trailer today as part of the Warhammer Skulls Showcase, and this one finally shows off the waves of Tyranids you’ll need to stomp through in this surprise sequel. Most games set in the Warhammer 40K universe have drawn from the setting's heritage in tabletop strategy games, but there have been a few that have let you personally feel the power of the Adeptus Astartes. One of the best of those is Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, which is now old enough to be getting a tenth Anniversary Edition - which is a free upgrade if you already own Space Marine on Steam. Rise, brothers, to venerate Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine as it celebrates its tenth birthday this month. Relic Entertainment and Sega have a surprise for us all too, turning the third-person ork-smasher into an 'Anniversary Edition' which includes all the DLC as well as bonuses like the soundtrack. We don t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much. There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game. …
