While FromSoftware is set to imminently reinvent its multiplayer approach with Elden Ring Nightreign, nothing beats the thrill of the original Dark Souls. The simple act of etching your soapstone into the ground and waiting to be summoned, or calling on a random player to help you finally defeat Ornstein and Smough, is unlike any other online experience. Elden Ring's Seamless Co-op mod is by far the most popular fan creation FromSoftware's magnum opus has ever seen. With nearly nine million downloads, it keeps the spirit of the studio's unique take on multiplayer alive while making it much more player-friendly. Visual fidelity isn't always the most important part of a FromSoftware project. Games like Elden Ring, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Dark Souls thrive on strong art direction and the atmosphere that defines their environments, though, and anything that helps players get the most out of those design elements is worth highlighting. There's no other game series like Dark Souls. FromSoftware's landmark series encouraged many imitators, but the trilogy's authenticity of design, lack of compromise, and approach to challenge cannot be beaten. Elden Ring brought this to the open world, but the Dark Souls trilogy used more condensed design in ways that help it hold up today. We might be decades on from pixel art being the dominant video game art style, but that won't stop some modders adding some of that flair into Dark Souls. People love a demake. I think a crucial test of a game's visual identity is how well it holds up to a demaster. Bloodborne, for instance, manages to remain recognisably and wonderfully itself when you turn it into some kind of PS1-style kart racer, and it's in no small part down to the talent of both the demaster's makers and FromSoft's art team. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon represents something special for fans of FromSoftware, and anyone with even a passing interest in the rise of the popularity of the Japanese developer.
