This current era of the internet is very easily the worst one, even within its comparatively short existence. A myriad of reasons contributes to this, the most annoying and newest one being the advent of AI preying upon every last post you release unto the world. Artists are essentially in a constant state of looking over their shoulder in a dark alleyway in fear of their works being stolen. So what is Lucas Pope, creator of Papers, Place and Return of the Obra Dinn doing to combat this? Simply not sharing his work. Read more

If someone asks me to list my favorite games, you have to go dangerously far before a triple-A title rears its head. Citizen Sleeper. Disco Elysium. Before Your Eyes. Return of the Obra Dinn. Only then does a triple-A sneak into my top five, either Titanfall 2 or Dragon Age: Origins, depending on my mood that day. I'm no gaming hipster, I just love games that try new things, and that tends to happen in the indie scene. Our list of the best indie games is full of bangers, but there are more and more low-priced gems releasing every year. I'm just glad that, seven years after release, more player

It's the middle of a calm night as you climb the ladder and board the Obra Dinn. The ship is completely empty, not a soul in sight. Bleached, 1-bit visuals make the ship's edges look freckled and scratchy like someone has etched this whole vessel onto a chalkboard. The three lower decks are lined with cabins, cabinets, and closets. You'll be getting to know every inch of this ship during your time here. It's 1803 and a merchant ship once thought lost at sea has spookily drifted back to dock. It's been four years since the Obra Dinn went missing. Now that it has returned to the British Isles, c

What are the best retro games on PC? The gaming industry has come a long way over the last decade or two, but sometimes it's soothing to go back to the basics. Games-as-a-service titles like Fortnite and Overwatch have set the benchmark over the last few years by adding new content and cosmetics over an annual plan - something that has been adapted or originated by plenty of other studios, too. It's not all sunshine, battle passes, and dabbing, though. There's still space for games in the modern day that buck these trends by putting on a pair of rose-tinted pair specs, from Doom-like FPS games

What's new in version 1.2.120: Updated engine from Unity 5 to Unity 2017 I can't believe I shipped this game on Unity 5, which was already old back in 2018. Maintenance is impossible on such an expired version of Unity so this update drags it up to 2017. Slightly more quaint than ancient now. Quaincient. Added Ukrainian language support Thanks to Olga Sushytska. Added Arabic language support Thanks to Eternal Dream Arabization, who also led me patiently through the labyrinthian funhouse of bidirectional text. Converting from Unity 5 to Unity 2017 and adding RTL text support required a number o

With all the controversy about NFTs - including companies announcing support for them before retracting that support shortly afterward - indie game site Itch.io has taken to Twitter to confirm its stance on the blockchain currency: "NFTs are a scam", with some harsh words for any company that deals in them. NFTs are a deeply controversial topic in the games industry - and the world in general, really. Steam has banned any games that use them outright, and any game studio that has announced plans to utilise NFTs - such as Team 17 or the team behind STALKER 2 - has faced immediate backlash, desp

Watching Return Of The Obra Dinn‘s creator build the game’s levels is like watching the work of a serial killer who’s obsessed with the detective chasing them, artfully laying out corpses and tweaking gruesome scenes for maximum surprise and mystery. A torso here, a pair of shoes there, and oh the detective will kick themself when they realise what they actually happened here. Lucas Pope has released a time-lapse of modelling the ship, see, condensing three years of work into an hour of video. I do like a good time lapse video, and this is one. (more…)

Return Of The Obra Dinn is something truly special. I haven’t played a game before or since that forces such high levels of engagement and thought, whilst somehow not feeling like a chore or a hassle. Dropped off off the coast of Falmouth, you’re tasked with learning what happened to the entire crew of the ill-fated Obra Dinn merchant ship, which mysteriously drifted ashore with heavy damage and no crew. Playing as an insurance investigator for the East India Company isn’t exactly the most delicious or exciting prospect, but your magic pocket watch brings things into sharpe

One Off The List is our weekly list feature. Is there something you think doesn’t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next week it may be struck off. If you plumb the depths of human ingenuity you will resurface with a wet box of penicillin and 100 million bits of different-coloured plastic. We people are very good at making useful things, and then killing ourselves with them. But videogames, my friends. Videogames hold the solution to our self-destructive ways. That tech utopia your pal Start-up Stan is always talking about is in reach, we just need to find

One Off The List is our weekly list feature. Is there something you think doesn’t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next week it may be struck off. When the historians of the future cast their cyber-eyes over the deluge of stupidity we encrusted upon the primitive internet, they will see that our fables, our moral storytelling, was mostly conducted with flashing colours and double-jumps. Yes, videogames have adopted the moralistic finger-wagging of fairytales and Victorian novels, for better or for worse. They have taught us a lot about ourselves and our pl

One Off The List is our weekly list feature. Is there something you think doesn t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next week it may be struck off. It s Friday the 13th, the day of Saint Badluck, patron saint of ladders and casinos. And it is a fabulous holiday. Out there, parades are getting ready to be rained on, and children are looking forward to tonight s shenanigans, when they will dress up as mirrors and knock on doors, declaring: sweets or I ll smash myself . I love Friday the 13th. So many cherished memories. So many splinters of reflective glass. So,

What makes a good detective game? It's a harder question than you might think. From puzzle-solver to shooter to narrative choice-maker, detective games represent a unique blurring of genre. But they also retain some of gaming's most recognisable hallmarks. Whether it's a trench coat, a sinister scheme, or a world-weary protagonist with a whiskey-soaked voice - all things that have migrated to games from film noir and crime fiction. In a similar fashion, detective games have formed their own mechanical quirks - finding clues, reconstructing events, interrogating suspects, using 'detective visio

Version 1.1.110 is now up, with various updates to the Korean localization (thanks to Bada Im) along with some spot fixes for the Simplified Chinese localization. I've also added a savefile backup system, detailed here, in the hopes of salvaging lost progress after a crash or cloud hiccup. The full changelog is over here.

Six months from the initial release, I've finally added full official Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese localizations. My original plan was to have these ready a week or two after the original launch back in October 2018 so apologies for the extended delay. Along with these new localizations, the recently-posted version 1.1.108 also contains a few miscellaneous fixes detailed here: Please let me know in the discussions or through support if you run into any problems.
