We’re in Yellowstone this week, mixing business with pleasure (perhaps more focus on the latter than the former). We’re revisiting our favorite areas — the game maps, of course — and hiking to spots in those areas that we have not explored previously. What first drew us to the Katmai Coast as the location for a WolfQuest Game expansion? It was research conducted by Ellen Dymit, a wildlife biologist and doctoral student who has been studying the diet of wolves along the coast (and who played WolfQuest when she was young!). The state of Alaska is big -- very big. And so is Katmai National Park and Preserve, the location for the upcoming Katmai game expansion. Katmai is almost twice as big (16,500 square kilometers) as Yellowstone National Park (about 9,000 square kilometers). So, where in that vast expanse should we put our Katmai Coast game map? Obviously we want to set it on the coast -- but the Katmai coast is 800 kilometers long. In fact, it's the longest stretch of uninhabited coastline remaining in North America. Since announcing the upcoming Katmai Coast game expansion two weeks ago, we've seen a lot of discussion and received a lot of questions about it! In today's devblog I'll address a few of those. First: Many people are using the term "sea wolves" when talking about wolves in the Katmai expansion. This term is generally used to describe wolves who live on Vancouver Island and along the coast of British Columbia. For nearly twenty years now, enthusiastic players have shared ideas and suggestions on how improve WolfQuest. And that hasn't stopped with the release of the Saga! We appreciate all of them -- and it's also helpful to see what patterns emerge. For example, there are many suggestions on how to add more variation to the gameplay. The life of a wild wolf is (if they're lucky) quite consistent and repetitive from day to day and year to year. The game reproduces that pretty well.
